Over the last few days, purely because there has been nothing apart from international football on offer, I`ve started to focus on the forthcoming fixture against Derby County.
In our current predicament it is, off course, a fixture we must win, failure to do so would surely give us a winter we`d all rather not go through.
Yesterday, we printed an article containing some quotes from Kasey Keller. Our American keeper quite rightly pointed out that we should be looking at seven points out of the next nine available.
On paper, it`s not an insurmountable task. Surely, after splashing out over £20 million, we should be able to take three points off of Derby County and Reading in fixtures at Craven Cottage. That would leave us needing to take a point at Sunderland in the other game, possibly a tall order considering our appalling away form.
However, I`d say it is an absolute necessity to do so and I`ll explain why.
After the three aforementioned games we face a difficult (and even that`s an understatement) run of fixtures. We travel to Anfield, then face a strong Blackburn team at the Cottage before travelling to the home of the current champions, Manchester United. If that doesn`t concern you, our next fixture is then at Goodison Park.
Surely, they are four fixtures that, in my opinion, will shape our destiny this season.
If we were to enter them having not achieved our desired target against Derby, Reading and Sunderland, I`d fear for our chances of survival. Christmas could be a time when the vultures would be hovering or am I simply getting worried over nothing?
