Niemi in Shock Call Up!

Despite losing his starting position to Kasey Keller last weekend, our Finnish keeper has something to celebrate.

After apparently retiring from international football in 2005, the Finnish goalkeeper has remained true to his word by agreeing to be available for his country if needed.

Therefore, we are delighted to announce that Anti has been called up by the Finnish squad for their forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifier against Belgium.

Niemi, capped sixty-six times by his country, has been selected as the experienced back up for the Bolton keeper, Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The Bolton keeper is one yellow card away from suspension and by selecting Niemi the Finland manager, Roy Hodgson, has gone for experience rather than youth.

Our congratulations go to Anti on his call up.

Puzzled here! Why are some players allowed to retire from international football but others are not? Jamie Carragher has, Alan Shearer did but they won't let Claude Makekele! Fair play to Niemi though for leaving the option for a return open!
