The Carling Cup Quandary!

The Carling Cup Quandary!

After having survived a tricky away tie at Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup, Fulham can look forward to a third round tie.

It`s the round the clubs who have qualified to play in Europe this season enter the competition at. Unfortunately, I`m probably not the only person who struggles to make sense of why these clubs are granted the privilege of basically having a bye to the third round.

I thought I could see the logic what with Arsenal and Liverpool having to play Champions League ties, over two legs, at the very point in the competition whereby the second round takes place, but what about the rest?

The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United haven`t kicked a European ball in anger, so why should they be exempt?

In fact, if they were to participate, there`d be the chance of two of the minnows being drawn against them thereby generating much needed revenue.

One point of debate could surround overhauling the competition. Is the answer to deny those competing in European competition the right to enter, thereby allowing someone else the right, or chance, to earn a vital European place the forthcoming season or would that devalue the competition?

We here at Vital Fulham would like to hear your points of view.

Meanwhile, we sit poised waiting for the third round draw which will take place this Saturday, any guess on who we`ll draw?

Personally, I`d settle for anyone at home seeing as our away record leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes but why should Liverpool and Arsenal be exempt (because of champs league qualifiers) and Man U & Chelsea not be exempt just because they don't have qualifiers to play? Afterall Man U & Chelsea dont have qualifiers as they finished higher up in the league and it would be harsh for them to have to play a 2nd round game when Arsenal & Liverpool get byes.
