That Old Age Question?

That Old Age Question?

What do you think?

Desperate to preserve our Premier League status, some pundits are suggesting that the previous incumbent of the managerial chair at Craven Cottage, Martin Jol, filled the squad with too many older players.

Ahead of the fixture with Arsenal, one of those golden-oldies, Scott Parker has stepped forward to refute the suggestion, remarking,

"We have an older squad, but there is experience there and we have an understanding."

"I hear what people are saying, but, if you look at the stats and data, I don`t think there have been many games in which we have under-performed."

"Age is not a limit, it can only help. When you have been in difficult situations before, you have an understanding of what needs to be done. That can only help us."

"There are some senior players here, big characters, like Duff, Hangeland and Berbatov - they all have vast experience and have played at top club. It`s a positive."

So who do you believe is right, Scott or those pundits?

I don't believe it has to do with the age of the squad. I think we have a good mix of youth and experience. The problem has been injuries. When our back four was set and working together it provided a good base for the team to get results. More important is the desire to work on defense. When we have an unsettled back four, players like Ruiz and Berbatov who don't work as hard on defense exacerbate our problems. With a strong back four and guys like Parker who protect the back four, Berbatov and Ruiz would be fine. As for Scotty Parker being old, I'd take 11 guys that work as hard as he does any time regardless of their age. I like Berbatov, but I think he fits better on a team that has a large squad so that he can be used appropriately. We don't have enough players to play multiple styles depending on who is out due to injury.
