'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Conundrum that is Berbatov!

Now, this morning upon opening my e-mail inbox, there was an e-mail promoting a possible poll suggestion.

Submitted by TrainerJohn the subject matter related to Dimitar Berbatov and my general view is that the poll suggestion would be better served by using it as a prompt to hopefully start a debate.

TrainerJohn wanted to know whether the Bulgarian striker was, with his unusual style, helping or hurting us.

The e-mail came with six possible options, which are listed below:-

1 - Helps: who else is going to score!

2 - Helps: we just need to get him the ball!

3 - Helps: but he needs to shut up and play!

4 - Hurts: his presence makes us one dimensional...and that dimension isn't working!

5 - Hurts: his negative response on the field is driving apart the team!

6 - Hurts: he a player of a class that we can't support. Trying to do so is costing us an identity!

Now, on the back of an excellent debatable subject, which of the six options do you best think describes Dimitar Berbatov?

Well, 3 I guess, however I don't think 1 player can be blamed for making a team one dimensional. We have other players with talent and ability who can provide different styles of attack. With Berbs, he has been marked out of each game, and Jol didn't have a decent or effective plan 'B'. That in effect created a scenario that Berbs couldn't play because of the marking, and likely a reason for being more temperamental recently, and the rest of the team resorted to simple Sunday football long ball tactics.
Riverside Chanter
Clearly between 3 and 5 at this point. The end of the season will show a clear answer. There is no place in any team for the sulking, moaning and glaring.
Perhaps 4 could have been written differently. I agree Riverside that one player doesn't make a whole team one dimmensional. I was trying to get across that his presence is preventing us from being more creative up top. Everyone is waiting for him to be the savior of the offense. That just isn't going to happen. Would his absence reuquire the team to find a way to score by forcing us to be more creative and less dependent upon him? I wonder what his presence is doing to the team. Our identity changed when Jol and Berbatov came in and guys like Murphey and Dempsey left. With that said, I'm between 4 and 3.
