Dempsey Reflections

Clint may now be playing for a club in North London, but there is a right old furor going on up on Merseyside.

Although Brendan Rodgers cleared the decks, for Clint`s arrival, by moving eight players out of the club, it transpires that Liverpool were, according to some sources, only willing to pay £4 million for a play Fulham wanted £6 million for.

Now on the surface, £6 million for a player that scores 20 goals a season, from midfield, looks a bargain but it appears that the Liverpool owners were not prepared to commit to the purchase believing Clint wasn`t worth that sort of cash.

Following the closure of the transfer window, Liverpool`s owner, John Henry, wrote an open letter to the supporters informing them that times were changing and he`d not put the club`s future in doubt by cavorting with financial dangers.

But, in our opinion, if he can`t see that Clint Dempsey was worth £6 million of anybody`s money then the problems at Liverpool Football Club run far deeper.

Daglish wasted so much money overpaying for players, I can't blame the owner for being concerned. That said, if Joe Allen is worth £15m and Borini worth £10m, surely Dempsey was worth £6m. You could argue that Borini and Allen are young players and that Liverpool is investing in the future, which the signing the of Dempsey would not be in-line with, but having someone like Dempsey would help to ease the short-term pressure.

From Fulham's perspective, I really wish we could've reached a cash + Charlie Adam deal, or a straight swap, even. I think both Fulham and Liverpool would've been better off from it.

I honestly believe that someone from Fenway tapped up Dempsey while he was in the US and persuaded him to go on strike to drive his price down and it worked as we only got £6m for him, his and Liverpool’s behaviour in this matter show a real lack of class from both parties

For once I agree with you oldwolf........fulham did not bow to dempsey or liverpool and out of all this mess i think we can hold our heads high.....shame as i loved dempsey not only as a player but person, guess i was wrong. Hopefully at some point we get our creative midfield, ruiz?
