'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fulham v Chelsea Preview

It`s only September and already we`re contemplating playing our fifteenth game of the season and what a tasty one it threatens to be.

This Wednesday we make the short trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup.

With both sides having European aspirations, albeit at a different level, the Carling Cup could be viewed as an irrelevance, but it should not be forgotten that it is one oh the domestic trophies, aside form the out of reach Premier League title, that we could possibly win.

But, as is often the case, the bread and butter that is the Premier League and the necessity to ensure we retain our place in it, means that the eleven that take to the field on Wednesday night will be far removed from that which Martin Jol would select for a Premier League fixture with Jol already promising a lot of changes will be made.

Already the inference is that Bobby Zamora won`t make the trip with Bobby commenting in the press this morning,

"In terms of my ankle, I`d rather rest to be honest even though I want to play."

"The European nights are nice, but at the minute we want to get points in the Premier League."

"The gaffers said we`ll rest you for some games. It`s a big game against Chelsea but it`s up to the gaffer."

Predicting a starting eleven is almost impossible so suffice to say we`ll veer away from doing such a thing.

The same could be said about our opponents. Andre Vilas-Boas has an array of talent at his disposal and the possibility exists that he too could select a starting eleven that is far removed from that he`d normally do for a Premier League game.

But one name we expect to see feature on the team sheet is Didier Drogba, with the Ivorian coming back after a lay-off through concussion.

Indeed, what the tie could boil down to is which of the sides has the better depth to their squads or perhaps one manager might be bluffing about his true intentions.

Whatever the case, it promises to be a great night out in West London with a large Fulham contingent taking advantage of cheaper than usual ticket prices at Stamford Bridge to cheer their side on.
