Hangeland on Europa League Qualification
If we are to be pitched into the Europa League, via the Fair Play League, Brede Hangeland has this theory that we should be better rewarded than have to commence battle in the first round on June 30th.
Our Norwegian centre-back who netted two fine goals at St Andrews, on Saturday, is critical of the fact, just like Mark Hughes, of the way the pre-season is severely truncated, even more so when some of the players, like Brede, report for international duty once the domestic season finishes.
This is what Brede had to say,
"It is bad if you get that Europa League spot because you have to start playing games too early."
"If it`s regarded as a prize, you need to get into the first-round proper or the group stages."
"You can`t ask teams to play in the middle of the summer, or at a time when the players should really be on the beach resting. We`re stretching it a bit too far."
I guess one solution, although it might not meet with everybody`s approval, is to allow our youngsters to carry the torch in those first few matches and if we crash out, so be it!

i'd be ok with that, but i'm not sure how the europa league would appreciate it... OR we could go a similar route, but in the carling cup instead... mirror what arsenal has done and send our reserve team to the carling cup matches to rest the senior squad...

I think that's the only way we can do it, you can't ask the first team to play 70+ matches in one season, plus it would be good to see the development squad add to the success of the first team and it’s also lets the management see who can make the step up to the next level in competitive games, and let’s face it after our last run in the competition no one is going to take us lightly so they will definitely be competitive games.

If it starts so early we can play the youngsters, fringe players and any new additions. It could also be part of pre season plans. Once the season starts and if we are still in it then we can go for it. Last time we got to the final and finished 12th in prem. So it can be done without costing us prem status....
