'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Fulham - Hughes Reflects Why!

It`s very disappointing to have gone out of the FA Cup, especially at home to Bolton Wanderers.

But perhaps it is fair to say that we never really got the rub of the green yesterday when refereeing decisions didn`t quite go in our favour, as Mark Hughes explained in his post match interview with the media,

"There were a couple of situations where you think 'The referee needs to make a positive decision` and just waving your arms and saying 'Play on` at times can be a cop-out."

"You`ve got to be strong enough to make decisions when they are needed. There were certain situations where he said he was playing the advantage. Bu tin and around the opposition box you don`t necessarily want the advantage."

"You want free-kicks and set-plays, which we didn`t seem to get. We had very few in the first half."

"Second half, there were a few decisions that we probably disagreed with and that I found difficult to understand."

"But it is always a dangerous thing to talk about referees when you`ve just got beaten in the cup because it smacks of sour grapes. So I don`t really want to go there."

On reflection, perhaps a set-piece was going to be our best chance of scoring on a day when it just didn`t quite go right for us.

Its a gutter to go out of the cup but think 3 points when we play them again in the prem is much more important. Especially this year as the bottom to mid table is so close. Heads up. COYW.

i don't like hughes' post match quotes... they always smack of excuses. was it the ref's fault that we had 7 goal attempts on target and 11 corners and couldn't equalize? was it the ref's fault that we played keepyuppy in our box until klasnic scored an acrobatic volley? i do believe the ref could have done a better of controlling the game, by giving out cards earlier in the match... nobody saw petrov's elbow into baird's face, and amazingly no one saw him raise his hands in retaliation. i would have liked a better policed match, but that did not cost us the game...

true, to win you must score.....but i think hughes was highlighting the ref and if he was poor it would certainly affect the play. Bolton played to the ref and we did this against chelsea last week. When refs spoil flowing football it plays into the teams that play defensively, as bolton did.

I agree that the ref was poor, but it is ridiculous to suggest that this went all for Bolton and all against Fulham. Hangeland was allowed to push Kevin Davies in the back time after time with not even a free kick being given. Baird did very well to escape a red card - the linesman must have seen it so it should have been a simple decision under the rules these days. Meanwhile, a number of Bolton's players got away with shirt tugging SOME of the time. But come on, shirt tugging versus hand in face! Putting that aside, it's good to see that you've recovered from your early season form. 10 seasons ago, you, Blackburn and us became the only 3 promoted teams all to survive their first season in the Prem. It will be 10 seasons of survival for the 3 of us. That’s worth celebrating.
