Fulham - Zamora on England Chance Slipping Away!

Fulham - Zamora on England Chance Slipping Away!

The season, after a mammoth sixty-three games, is finally over.

For one man it has ended in personal disappointment, something that has put a dampener on what has been a great season for him.

For the last few months his performances have seen several leading exponents of our fine game championing his cause with regards to a place in the England World Cup squad.

After having, apparently, missed the boat, we learned that Fabio had indeed seen the light and opted to select Bobby in his provisional 30 man squad.

But fate had one last trick in store for Bobby, the Achilles injury that has clouded the last few weeks of his season was to put an end of a dream of forcing his way into the final squad of 23 that will be going to South Africa.

Bobby takes up the story,

"I knew I wouldn`t have done myself or England justice had I gone."

"It was a joint decision between myself, Capello, Fulham`s medical team and England`s medical team. The World Cup is a massive tournament. It`s not about myself, it`s about England."

"Capello wished me all the best and hoped that I get fit and would be available for next season. It`s one of those things, it has come at a bad time and the last five weeks have been terrible for me."

Not the ideal end to a season that had been going so well for Bobby especially when you consider his form had silenced his detractors and endeared him to the Cottagers. Continuing, in an interview given to the media, Bobby remarked,

"It`s been an up and down season because it`s been so good on the pitch and I`ve scored some important goals. To now pick up this injury has kicked me in the teeth. It`s come during the last couple of weeks and when there was the possibility of going to the World Cup with England."

"That`s football, it`s a cruel game."

It sure is and do we need reminding after last night in the Nordbank Arena?

I personally would have loved to see Bobby pull on an England shirt this summer, sadly it wasn't to be. I think Rooney and Bobby could have had a great partnership up front for England.
