Fulham - Let's Leave the Tactics to Roy, Yeah?

Fulham - Let's Leave the Tactics to Roy, Yeah?

Okay, I have been browsing the forums on the official site lately and have noticed one player in particular has come in for stinging criticism.

That player is Dickson Etuhu!

Moans about him seem to range from: he can't pass very well and he's not very adventurous.

Anyone who has watched Fulham over the last 18 months should realise that the defensive midfield role utilised by Roy is one of interception and breaking up play.

Who better to do that than Dickson with his presence, strength and height.

Now, I know Dickson isn't the best passer in the land and isn't the most creative of players but he is successful in that role and quite simply doesn't need the ball too much, so he will play it quickly to either Murphy, the wingers or the full backs to start another attack.

I've seen two suggestions offered.

Firstly, we have Chris Baird to take the role. Despite having had a good season, Baird doesn't seem to have the presence of Etuhu and he seems to me to be a far better defender.

Then we have Dikgacoi offered up as an alternative. What is this based on, I ask?

Dikgacoi seems like he has a lot of potential, but let`s not forget he only really had a run of two great games before his injury. Surely, it'd be better to gradually take him to the role.

Maybe, I like the Murphy/Etuhu midfield combination too much because last season it was fantastic when it became the settled norm but various reasons have limited their playing time together this season.

Why don't we be positive and just support Dickson (and Danny) in the role they do or whoever Roy decides to choose!

Etuhu's role, in our system, is to protect the back four, and for my money, he does a great job at it. We're a MUCH better side with him on the pitch. The central midfield began performing SO MUCH better once he came back from injury. Baird did well filling in, but he's not better than Etuhu, and Dikgacoi has done nothing to convince me that he's better than either one of them. Really can't understand the criticism aimed at him.

yeah, i feel like there are other players more worthy of shots of critism... i'm most going to echo teddy here, as etuhu is great at winning balls and tackling strongly without really fouling too often... he allows murphy to create, which is why they work together so well... he's not a creative player... and neither is baird... baird may look to make a more adventurous pass more often, but that doesn't make him better suited for the role. i think dikgacoi has the potential to be good as well, and maybe he can add some creativity while still protecting the back four as much as etuhu, but, as teddy said, it was a clear difference of when etuhu was in the squad and when he was out injured... leave the man alone, or better yet, support your squad!

Etuhu does a vital job, since he came back into the team the midfield is clicking better and he is far better than any alternative that we have at the club.

I think Etuhu is a very under rated but key player for us, I bet Steve Bruce would love to have him back at Sunderland. He may have a few shortcomings but he fits what Roy thinks we need and as always Roy is pretty much spot on.
