Fulham - Creativity

The January transfer window is over and no more deals will be completed until the start of an all new season; 2010/11. There is one deal I think we have missed out on, and that is the opportunity to bring in a creative central midfielder.

The fans have been shouting out for someone who can really provide that spark for us, but, Roy doesn't seemed to have even considered the position over the course of the last month.

Maybe that is sensible, given the fact we have a whole host of central midfielders. However, they all seem a bit defensive minded to me.

The only man that I can truly say is a menace in that midfield of ours is captain, Danny Murphy. I am not the only one though, that thinks he is past his best and the only route is down for the former Liverpool player.

He hasn't proved to be quite as creative and threatening as he did last year, and he certainly doesn't seem to be bringing that side back into his game. We must face it; He's getting old, and we can't rely on him for too much longer.

On top of that, I never really felt he had the flair to pass as a top-drawer 'creative' midfielder. Yes, he has the eye for a pass and yes he knows how to set up an attack or two, but he really doesn't strike any fear into defences.

Now, I do realise that should be the job of an attacker in reality, but when you look at the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, you realise it is well and truly possible to cause major problems from the central midfield position.

Let's be honest, he's never provided that for us, and certainly never will do.

But, that leaves the question of what player on the market at the moment could possibly replace Mr Murphy?

His passing is still first rate, but he lacks the ability to handle pressure without resorting to playing back to defenders or trying quick little flicks over the top of on-rushing opponents. He's too easily closed down. Over the past few weeks, its quite obvious that our opponents have discovered that keeping well organized across the back and pressuring Murphy in midfield more or less shuts down our attack. His service on set pieces is also not what it once was. He's very little threat even from just outside the area.

Hi guys Pompey fan here .. So you haven't got a creative midfielder... Neither have we.. nor a centre-half partnership.. nor a striker come to that ... Do you want to settle for a draw now ?

Replacements - from England, Tom Huddlestone, Stephen Ireland, Andy Reid, Kieran Richardson or Marcio Geovanni. From Europe, Mesut Özil, Zvjezdan Misimovic, Juan Arango, Andrea Cossu or David Pizarro. Doubt we could land any of them, though.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Murphy is getting older and is slowing down. As Teddy rightly stated, he is also being closed down much more easily of late, a prime example of this was the away game at Stoke. They immediately closed Murphy down as soon as he received the ball, totally severing any form of attack. In the absence of Pantsil, Konchesky and Dempsey this issue becomes more obvious, so perhaps the limelight falls somewhat unfairly on Murphy, who along with Duff is struggling to make things happen in a makeshift team.

I'm a fan of Stephen Ireland

Chix, you have my sympathies for what is happening down there at the moment, as usual, those with the money bodge it up for the fans
DeuceBigelow
yea stephen ireland for me as well... wonder if we could get him over the summer if he knows he won't get minutes at man city... but it's true... murphy's been a shadow of himself... i'm hoping with etuhu back, his form with return... here's hoping, but we need some youth at that position...

Yep, spot on analysis. Problem is, good creative midfielders are expensive and very hard to come by. Ireland would cost a fortune!

Sunday 7th Feb, it has been reported today that Mancini would be prepared to let Ireland go in the Summer. We should do everything in our power to sign him.
