Fulham - Baird - Defender or Midfielder?

With our injury list this season far exceeding that of last season, it has provided the perfect opportunity for some players to show what they can do

One such player is Chris Baird.

Baird who was chastised by many a Fulham supporter last season and who it was thought had little or no future at Craven Cottage, has been thrust into an unfamiliar midfield role lately after injuries to Danny Murphy and Dickson Etuhu affected Roy Hodgson`s plans.

Baird has fitted into the role as if it was made for him. But the recent success hasn`t seen Baird change his opinion with regards to his best position. The no-nonsense Irishman still sees himself as a defender and has remarked to the local media as such, commenting,

I honestly don`t know whether this will be my position from now on.'

'It`s down to the manager."

'The manager sees it as I`m doing well in midfield and, the more games I play, the more I`m getting used to the position."

'But the number one spot for me is still centre half, and I still see myself as a centre-half.'

'When Danny Murphy and Dickson Etuhu were injured, I wasn`t expecting it to be me put into midfield. But I know I can do the job and I`ve loved every minute of it."

'My confidence is sky-high. I`ve been looking forward to every game and I`ve tried to play as best as I can, both for myself and for the team. Hopefully, things can continue in that vein.'

In a short space of time I`d suggest that Baird has turned around the Fulham faithful` perception of him, good on you Chris and long may you serve our club.

I think he is doing an outstanding job as a defensive midfielder at the moment, works very well with Danny Murphy and could cause Etuhu problems getting back in to the team when he’s fit again. The fact that he can also play centre half as well is a bonus but I would rather see Smalling get more first team chances if Hangeland or Hughes are out.

yes. smalling is the number 3. baird has played brilliantly, but i think it'd be foolish to keep him there once etuhu is healthy...

Baird is incredibly versatile and in that sense, becomes invaluable.

I've eaten my words on Baird, he's done brilliantly this season and should stick it out in midfield. Smalling is a better defender, also Baird isn't particularly tall so he's not going to be able to win all those aerial balls in the way Hangerland, Hughes and Smalling can
