Fulham - Strikers Drought Unraveled?

It`s a theme that seems to have carried on from last year!

A theme that continually suggests that our strikers do not score their fair quota of goals, not that it did us much harm last year when we stormed to our highest ever league finish.

The mutterings will, undoubtedly, carry in, I doubt they`d even cease if one of our strikers was leading the charge for the golden boot!

It`s just one of those things that people get embedded in their mindset and continually believe to be true.

Therefore, it`s interesting to hear Bobby Zamora receive a vote of confidence from within the side with Brede Hangeland actively remarking about our Bobby,

"I think he`s a good finisher, he just needs a bit of luck in front of goal."

Or possibly a few more chances created for him!

It`s noticeable, in recent games, that our shot, including those off target, regularly sits in single figures whilst other clubs whose statistics I enviously gaze at invariably average fifteen or so.

So is that our real problem when it comes to our striker - we don`t make enough chances to even give them a fair chance of a decent conversion rate?

I`d be interested to hear your views!

I think a lot of it comes down to Murphy's deeper role this year, he isn't playing as attacking as he did last season. Though saying that, the strikers struggled for goals last year whilst the midfielders created a fair few chances.

The midfield performances has been the chief concern for me. The forwards need to score, but to be fair, there have been fewer chances. I think the idea that Murphy is playing deeper is really a matter of him having to retreat to maintain possession. I hope he's regained his form with his recent displays, but his early season performances suggest that age is beginning to take its toll. Etuhu has had to take a greater roll in maintaining possession this season, which has taken him about of position defensively. It's cost us on a few occasions.

...taken him OUT of position... I should proof read my posts.

I sat behind the goals against Basel and he got into the box over the ball a number of times, and he kept passing the ball off (most of the time to no-one) rather than having a go. He looked like he wanted to walk the ball into the goals rather than take the keeper on. I think Roy needs to tell him to start being a bit selfish and shoot at everything for a game or 2

not sure that Bobby is ever going to be a prolific scorer!
Fulham Badger
it's his hold up play and runs that make him what he is though!
