Fulham - Roy on That Starting Eleven (Again!)

Fulham - Roy on That Starting Eleven (Again!)

It`s hard to know whether, in hindsight, Roy Hodgson pulled of a masterstroke or got a little lucky in making nine changes in Sofia last night.

Whilst accepting that 1-1 was a reasonable score I can`t help thinking that a first choice starting eleven would have taken all three points, three points that would have served us well when you consider one of the teams we need to pip to qualify for the next stage, Basle, pulled off a shock win over AS Roma.

But, Roy, as you`d expect, stuck to his guns over his team selection and in his post match interview emphasized the fact that those who he did select performed admirably, remarking,

"We handled the situation brilliantly. We responded excellently to their goal."

"The team justified its selection, which was backed up by the powers-that-be at the club."

"And I won`t be frightened to do it again, especially after that performance. If we are going to handle the Europa League and the Premier League we`ll have to use the maximum number of players UEFA allows us."

All good points but I can`t help thinking we could come unstuck at least once or twice somewhere down the line!

We were somewhat lucky, but Roy did what he had to do and I think it turned out as he planned. I think he was playing for the away draw, and that's exactly what he got. You're right that three points could've really eased our situation, but if he'd played a strong lineup and ended up with the same result (we're not prolific scorers even with the normal 11, you know), he might have jeopardized our form against Wolves. Now, if we don't take full points from Wolves, there will be room for criticism, but if we take full points on Sunday, I don't think anyone can really complain about Sofia.
