Fulham - That Etuhu Challenge!

Yesterday, during the second half, there was a sickening collision between our own Dickson Etuhu and Phillip Neville.

As soon as it happened Neville was obviously in a lot of pain, there was no theatrical rolling around the pitch, he simply lay there in agony with an arm raised.

Play, as the law now states, wasn`t stopped immediately but when it was it was obvious that Neville couldn`t continue with the Everton club doctor attending to him.

Initially, there were fears that Neville had broken his leg, something I wouldn`t wish on any player, but post match it was announced he`d just sustained a deep gash below his knee, a case of stitch that sunshine!

After the match there could well have been a case for a slanging match with David Moyes and Roy Hodgson debating the merits of what was, basically, a 50-50 ball.

Instead, whilst implying that perhaps Etuhu should have been booked and a free kick given, Moyes was gracious enough to accept that Etuhu wasn`t a malicious player, remarking,

"I don`t think he is that kind of player. He was a bit late - it merited a free kick and possibly a booking."

Whereas Roy Hodgson simply stated something we all recognise,

"There was no intent on Dickson`s part."

Here at Vital Fulham, we simply hope that Phillip Neville makes a swift return, however if it had of been Gary…………………..

New today is he has done his knee ligaments (not just a gash in his knee), and is out for up to 4 months! Was obviously a 50 50 challenge though, and sadly for nev he just got there that little bit quicker.

It seems it's more than a gash, now. Reports suggest he sustained ligament damage. Unfortunate turn, I'm afraid. It was certainly a 50/50 ball and Etuhu did get the ball before making contact with Neville. I wouldn't have been terribly aggrieved if Etuhu had received a yellow card, but in all honesty, I didn't think he deserved one as it wasn't reckless.

Definitely 50/50. I wish all the best to Phil.

i don't etuhu was trying to hurt phil or anything like that. I just think that it was a poor and dangerous challenge... neville's challenge wasn't the best either, and certainly put himself into a position to receive the worst of etuhu's challenge... i just think that kind of tackling in unnecessary... etuhu's studs went through the ball and into neville's knee... it might have even been clean to the letter of the law, but i personally feel it invites injury... i certainly would have been upset if it was etuhu that was injured...

I'm sorry but I have to defend Dickson here. That was the tackle of the season. It was a 50/50 and he won the ball before Neville and sure his trailing leg caught Neville, but if you look at the footage, Neville's leading leg actually goes into Dickson's knee. That is surely more dangerous. Also, if Gerrard or Lampard had made that challenge, we'd not have heard the last of how fantastic it was. It was a superbly timed 50/50 tackle, he won the ball and to be honest, Neville needs his brain checking as he was clearly going to lose in a challenge with Dickson!

Neville was having a bad game, in a side who have managed to go from cup finalists and comfortably 5th, to 19th in less than 4 months. The fans are *****ed enough, if players start backing out of 50/50's they'd be slaughtered by the fans. Besides I think that's a rather biased view of the incident AlexFFC, both players went in hard and neville came out injured. You take it to a bit extreme by making it sound like a fantastic challenge that in the end, taught Neville right for daring to try and get the ball. Our players seem to have weak ******** ligaments - Yakubu missed from Novemeber last year for ankle, Arteta from march with his knee, Anichebe the same, and Jags still 2 months away after doing his knee in April. Our training program must push them too hard, surely no other side would lose their Captain, top scorer, best player, best defender and Anichebe in the space of less than a year all too similar injuries for at least 4 months...

very true mike all sounds about right 50 50 besy of luck to phil nev
truth sayer ffc
much respect to you, everton mike, as if it was the other way around and etuhu was done up for a while, i'd certainly be salty about it...
