Fulham - Dempsey's USA Go So Close!

It just wasn`t meant to be was it?

Sat tuned into the final of the Confederation Cup I was cheering myself hoarse hoping that the USA could pull off the improbable.

I`d been casting an eye towards the tournament from the early stages but never did I dare dream that Clint Dempsey and his USA comrades would go so near to winning the damn thing.

When Demspey gave the USA that lead and Donavon increased it, it looked as if the impossible was about to happen.

Sadly common sense, in the form of the Brazlian side, prevailed and the favourites edged home 3-2 with minutes to go.

However, Clint and his boys can hold their heads high and the USA team could shock a few people at the World Cup on the same soil this time next year.

It was also refreshing to hear, during the torunament, that his superb performances have not turned his head with Clint being quoted as saying,

"I think I have two more years left at Fulham and I`m happy and enjoying my time there."

"Roy Hodgson, Mike Kelly and Ray Lewington have done a great job helping me develop as a player."

"I`m a more complete player now than when I first arrived in England."

"I owe a lot to them."

Loyal, humble and one of ours, that's our Clint!

The USA just didn't have the pace to keep up, particularly the back line. They played well, but were simply overmatched, particularly in the 2nd half when all the US could do was send up long ball after long ball to no avail. Tim Howard had to make so many great saves in the 1st half that you knew the second half would just be more of the same. Alas, the lack of possession and wave after wave of Brazilian attack was just too much.

true... the early goal in the second half really transformed the game... if we had held out a bit longer, i think the game could have ended differently... but we can't be too upset at pushing a football powerhouse to the brink in a fifa final... very proud of our squad, and more importantly, they gave themselves a sense of self belief...

Should do wonders for our chemistry at the World Cup. I think the self-beleif is the most important thing that they will come away with though.

they were doing fine until I tuned in - my fault then I guess!
