Fulham - Zamora in Spanish Link!

The Daily Mirror seem to have created up a story with very little factual basis today claiming that Arsenal's Champion's League opponents, Spanish side Villrareal are interested in signing Bobby Zamora. Such is this utter codswallope they cannot even place a price on his head.

Whilst I wanted my first written contribution to be something a little more focused upon my 22 years as a Fulham fan I have jumped up to inform and comment upon this twaddle.

Whilst Villrereal have climbed the leagues like Fulham, nestle in a beautiful part of the world like Fulham, are a little club in a vast league playing attractive football the differences end there.

You see whilst Villareal have achieved Champions League football, they also have players a class above a few of ours. I could not see Bobby getting a game there if he did not score. English fans love players for their epic work rate and whilst I understand that booing a player who misses a few easy chances seems logical, if Bobby had worst defenders to face he would score more.

So, what am I trying to say...well he could set the place on fire. That place is likely to be Craven Cottage though, because the Mirror seem to offer no reason, proof or facts to back up this story, so don't worry about it.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry if he was going. If we are to press fro Europe, goals are vital!!

He's done well in the 'Heskey' role and his work rate is top notch. Still, I'd like someone who scores more. I'd like to see him stay in the squad, but as a sub. If that occurs, I'm afraid Nevland's days are numbered. They may be numbered anyway.

I have always been a fan of Zamora's work rate, don't get me wrong. It's just when he got that goal, I thought he was finally going to start hitting the target, and you can only give a guy so many chances....

Here's an idea. How 'bout a straight swap - Zamora for Marcos Senna. Did you guys see the pile-driver he scored against Arsenal last night? What a strike!

Twas a quality strike!! But wouldn't we be slightly short on strikers then!? :D

as Roy keeps saying, forward play is not just about goals it's about hard work and Bobby certainly does his bit!

That's true, but there are also times where he lacks that. For such an aerial dominant player, he does an half fall over a lot when going for the ball!

What could we get for the Johnson/Nevland package? Maybe a store credit from the Villareal gift shop.

here's the thing, while i wouldn't be crying if he left as he does leave the goal tally a bit light, i think it would be hard to replace him. when's the last time we had a forward with a large goal tally? also, he works well with aj. if he goes, we DEFINITELY need to replace him. is altidore playing for villareal? maybe we could take a chance on another american forward...

Altidore got in some games early in the season with Villareal; even scored. He's not out on loan at some 2nd division outfit, but he can't even get a game. A shame really, considering his recent hat trick. He's young. There still time for him to find his spot. I think maybe the Eddie Johnson episode may have tainted the perception of american forwards. I think he's got bags of potential, though.

Meant to say he's 'now' out on loan; not 'not' out on loan.

yeah sam, realistically i don't think jozi could walk into craven cottage and be a direct replacement for bobby... just a thought... i guess altidore would moreso be an answer for the "what could we get back for nevland and johnson" question...

Altidore is a good player! I agree not necessarily the best youngster around, but he has bundles of potential in him!

Altidore wont make it big time, just like Freddy Adu the fuss is all made by americans and what they know about football.... well i leave that for you. The players from america that do make it are ones with work rate like dempsey, bocanegra, mcbride and even friedel but the likes of adu, johnson, and landon donovan have had life all to easy! I would like to know what people are basing there criticsm of Nevland on hes barely had a chance and correct me if im wrong he hasnt started 2 games in a row. Oh and Eddie Johnson just scored for Cardiff .....

I would like to think that Altidore is finally learning to work hard for once. Granted, the competition in CONCACAF isn't the greatest, but Jozy, even after scoring the hat trick, was still running all around the park. Hopefully he can become a workaholic and really make his way in Europe. As far as Zamora actually transferring, I wonder how much Villareal would offer - it'd be interesting to see.

Wouldn't miss Bobby. We can easily find another worker. I would like to see Ibisevic of Hoffenheim signed, he'd be fantastic for us.

That is the way I see it too, hard workers aren't too difficult to come by. Can't say I can comment on Ibisevic's ability! :)

Fulham7 is right. We shouldn't criticize our own players. I was just having a little fun. My apologies. And thanks for pointing that out by unilaterally insulting american football fans. That is, after all, the best way to voice your disagreement. Perhaps Nevland is not getting enough opportunities because Roy Hodgson is actually an american in disguise and doesn't know what he's doing. And Eddie Johnson... well what can you say. What is that - 2 goals for Cardiff this season. How prolific. How dominating. How... how... Nevland-esque!

i personally didn't like bocanegra all that much in the backline for fulham... he wasn't accountable enough... and the lil' ol' usa produced mcbride and dempsey for us, so we can't be THAT bad... although i would agree that donovan and johnson are lazy... which is a shame, as i thought eddie could do better... altidore's still young and hopefully will learn a good work habit abroad... seriously though, i would be interested in following bradley... i think he can become a very good player as he ages as well...

We shouldn't criticise our own players, I agree, but sometimes you need to improve in areas....and in my eyes Zamora is one of them. I never used to thinks so, but, of late he is losing my trust in him!

I was being facetious, of course, about criticizing our own players. Fans are always going to be critical of players. Now, my little joke about the 'store credit' was unfair, but I was just trying to joke with Al Billy. That being said, I don't think we'll see Nevland or Eddie Johnson in Fulham kit next season. Like you said KB, we have to improve and sometimes that means replacing a favorite player. As an american, I'd be disappointed if Dempsey was replaced, but if it helps the team move forward, so be it. My loyalty is to the team; not just players of my nationality.

Jozy Altidore? Oh dear, stick with Zamora! Zamora is a good player, and a god awful goal scorer but Altidore is overrated just like Adu. He plays for Xerez currently in the second division of Spanish football and embarrasingly isnt even getting a sniff, the only reason Villareal were giving him game time was because they were (and still are) trying to justify the 7.4 million they paid for him!

Freddy Adu was on trial with Man U at 16 and they didnt snap him up! And yet after, everyone continued to rant about his "potential". I had to laugh... Would Manchester United let a player of his supposed "potential" get away if he was really that good? And Adu is still better than Altidore apparently, so would I hope for your sakes you steer clear of him! Zamora and Johnson works well for you, dont fix wont aint broken! And I cant stand Johnson so thats saying something!

If Zamora was even just a 15 goal a season striker he would be much more sought after than he is! But I think, like Heskey, you have to accept the negatives to reap the benefits of the positves.

Even Heskey can find the net now and then though! They are similar players, with many benefits, but I think in some ways, Zamora's work rate is overrated. If you take a free scoring side, i.e, Arsenal, they don't have a 'hold up' player, and yet they score goals a plenty. Obviously, they have a stronger midfield, but because of that, they don't have to lose something up front. I don't think a hold up player is needed, and that is why only 2-3 teams in this league have a striker who works hard, but never scores.

Forget workrate and all that, Zamora misses easy chances he has no right foot and he doesnt like abuse. What player ever made a name for themselves as a good tryer. "oh he tries ever so hard though - forgetting the fact he bottles more chances than Marlet" And whoever said dont fix whats not broken, its not broken it just hasnt been assembeld and after 30 games it should show signs of something instead it just shows signs of championship quality from zamora. I would like to see someone like - Iaquinta or Trezeguet who are ageing but forgotten about (obviously never of those are fulham players nor will they ever be - Maybe if trezeguet broke his legs a few times...) but someone like Brian Mcbride .... god i miss him...
