It`s been a strange first half of the season.
The way results have panned out I`d hazard a guess that, apart from the top five of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Arsenal, plus the bottom one of West Bromwich Albion, every other side must consider they have a chance of either being sucked into the relegation battle (if things go horribly wrong) or battling for a UEFA Cup place (if things go swimmingly well).
With our club enjoying an unbeaten run of six games (what do you mean four of those were draws?) we`ve every reason to be optimistic that this season we can enjoy a much higher finish than last season.
This feeling appears to have spread downwards to the players with Andrew Johnson remarking,
'On the back of those results, realistically, I think we can be looking at a top-10 finish, and possibly upwards of 10th spot.
'But it's such a tight league this year, and a few results can take you either way. We could go on a run of two defeats and, depending on other results, could well find ourselves in the relegation zone. Then again, two wins in succession could put us right up there."
'I've never known a league like this, where anyone can beat anyone. Usually by this time of the season gaps start to develop where there are maybe six to nine points separating the top seven or eight teams, but it's not like that this season and that's very strange.'
Like we suggested, there could be some unusual teams in the relegation and UEFA melting pots come March / April with a hell of a lot to play for!
