Smertin not out of the running

Alexei Smertin has today called out to Roy claiming he is in peak fitness and will not accept sitting on the bench.

The former Russian captain was hampered by injuries at the end of last season but wants to make the last year of his contract at the Cottage a memorable one.

'I would say that the previous season was somewhat ambiguous,' he revealed to Sport Express.

'At first, it was going well but then I was forced to be sidelined through injury troubles, while my club was one step from relegation.

'I am 33 years old already and I am full with ambitions. The coaches in the club come and go, but I don't want to sit on the bench all the time.

'My contract with Fulham will terminate in a year and I don't know what I will do next.

'I am still one of the best at training and examinations showed that I am much younger than in reality.'

I would go for him partnering Andreason in the centre behind Bullard Davies and Gera. Andranik can learn from the former Chelsea star.
