Alexei Smertin's Fulham stay to end?

Alexei Smertin's Fulham stay to end?

Fulham are willing to pay compensation to Alexei Smertin to release the Russian midfield player from the last year of his contract.

The ex-Chelsea star who has 52 Russian caps to his name and has also captained his country, has been deemed surplus requirements under new boss Roy Hodgson, and has not appeared in a Fulham shirt since the Sanchez era.

There were also talks of the midfielder leaving in January and returning to his home country, but any sort of move failed to materialise.

Although he's only experienced a short stint at Fulham, like he did at Portsmouth and Charlton, he did not fail to leave his mark with his good performances and hard work, and also got two good strikes, albeit deflected, to his name early in the season, which helped to earn Fulham some what ended up being valuable points.

I for one would like to thank Smertin for his contribution to the Fulham FC squad and wish him luck for the future. Please leave your opinions!

He had a fantastic start to the season, with an amazing pre-season too, maybe that is why lawrie got rid of Bouba? But he seemed to dissapear in games after 60-70mins.

Yeah, to be fair he's a good player. If the compensation that will be paid to him equals the amount we would have paid to him in wages I don't see why we don't keep him. In emergencies he can do a top job - he's a very good player, and his experience could also help in the reserves and help with the young players (who would be playing with the reserves). If it was him wanting to leave we wouldn't need to give him compensation. I'm sure he doesn't want to stay reserve, but it doesn't seem like he's dying to leave, so keep him if it costs the same :)

Well said, he was a good plauer but just didn't have the legs for a full game so there's no need to get rid of him

Agreed Oranje - But if he wanted to leave that bad we wouldn't have to pay him, would we? He'd just be on the list for peanuts or so. No contract would be broken, so no compensation paid :p
