The signing of Danny Murphy, by Lawrie Sanchez, was a signing that surprised us all.
The midfielder who had appeared to have gone off the boil in recent weeks probably arrived at Craven Cottage knowing this would be his last big chance.
Thankfully, Danny has proven us doubters wrong with some enterprising displays, displays that culminated in scoring the winning goal against Portsmouth yesterday, a goal that kept us in the Premier League by the skin of our teeth.
After the game, surrounded by journalists, Danny was keen to heap praise on Roy Hodgson for sticking to his principles and helping to steer Fulham out of danger, here`s what he had to say,
"He has always stuck with us, he`s believed in us. He has done a great job and brought in his new ideas."
"We play the right way even though we have been in the bottom three. We try to pass the ball about."
"Okay we get caught in possession sometimes when you are trying to play but that is the way the manager wants to play and he deserves credit for that."
"He has been giving us the belief to keep playing despite the position we have been in."
"Even when we were 2-0 down at half time at Manchester City the other week, he said - 'keep going, keep believing and keep passing it."
Naturally, Danny had to face the most obvious question of all, namely the importance of that goal, he took the opportunity to remark,
"It is up there - it has to be one of the most important goals I have ever scored."
"Obviously a lot of Liverpool fans remember me for the Man United goals. But that in terms of importance will never be forgotten by Fulham fans or myself."
"Of course it is nice to get the credit but the team has been full of heroes for the last few weeks so credit to everyone."
"We play the right way even though we have been in the bottom three. We try to pass the ball about."
And as for his feelings regarding the last few weeks,
"I am still coming down after this result. We thought we`d left it too late but it has been a hell of a few weeks."
"The players were not performing. But we got there in the end."
Danny Murphy, you`ve just carved yourself a place in Fulham folklore!
