'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Al Fayed`s Gesture!

They say the drop into the Championship is something many clubs never recover from!

The last time we dropped out of the top flight I believe it took us nigh on thirty-three years to return, a lifetime!

Therefore, if the worse comes to the worse and we do drop out of the Premier League this season, it is essential that we try to bounce back as soon as possible.

These days something called 'parachute payments` soften the financial blow but it is the decimation of the squad that usually blows away any thoughts of an immediate return for many.

Thankfully, according to one report lurking in the Sunday tabloids today, it appears that Mr Al Fayed is determined any absence will only be temporary and that the squad will, to his best endeavours, be kept in its current shape.

Most clubs, fearing relegation, have clauses inserted in player`s contracts that dictate that their salaries can be cut if the club are relegated. This cut can, in some cases, be as much as 50%, hence the usual mass exodus.

However, if the report I`ve read is correct, Al Fayed, in order to keep the squad together, has agreed not to invoke such clauses thereby halting any mass exodus.

Raise a glass to the man - he deserves it!

I still reckon half a dozen or so will leave!

who? and where? None of our team is really going to attract any attention from premiership teams! Davis might leave, Southampton might try to get baird back (at least i pray they will). Bullard has promised to stay. Keller wants to stay. The only ones i think we might struggle to hold onto are Dempsey, McBride (leave to America?), Konchesky and Simon Davies. Can't see anyone else going.

Oh and Healy has promised to stay too
oranje_emu
Well, not too many footballers keep their promises nowadays. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck! You should hold on to Bullard and Healy. They are 2 good players who provide you with lots of quality.

Healy staying! Now he'll make a difference won't he?
merlin
McBride will retire back to MLS. Dempsey might attrack a bit of interest but I think Konchesky, Davies and Bullard will be the main targets. No one will want any of Sanchez's buys apart from Konchesky. Expect Murphy to not be given a new contract either
donfulham
why do you think that?!?!?! I think Murphy has been rather good! And if Davis is going then we should keep him.
oranje_emu
I thought Murphy was only on a contract until end of season, I assumed that his wage demands would be too much for the Championship so he'd move on
